I had to save the Royal Rose before she drowned, and that left no time to waste. My pistol was still loaded, but a knife would suit me better for this particular plan. The blade was cool on my arm as I slid it from where I’d stashed it in my sleeve. I pivoted to Landon as if struggling for my balance and pierced him in the side.

He let out a deep grunt and doubled over. I made certain the blade was in far enough to render him helpless before pulling it out. He collapsed to his knees in pain.

I summoned all my strength and faced Pearl. “You will release me back to my ship and offer a boatswain to assist in fixing the damage you caused.”

The crew on board was larger than ours, and each of them had their pistols drawn. I didn’t care for the way they pointed at me, but I stood my ground.

Pearl chuckled. “You’ve changed much since I saw you last,” she said. “Your body is weaker, yet I suspect you are stronger.” A cloak hung from her shoulders and swayed around her knee-high boots, and she kicked it out of the way to lean herself at the ledge. We didn’t travel fast. We’d be here long after the Royal Rose sank. I could hear their frantic cries behind us as they struggled to piece the ship back together, and that sound fueled me.

At my feet, Landon inspected a blood-soaked hand. “You little witch,” he growled.

“You liar,” I hissed back. I raised my voice to Pearl. “I will kill you in one swift action if you don’t turn us around.”

She opened her mouth, likely to laugh again, and I flicked my blade at her. Had I been at full strength, that would have whizzed by her head, nicking her cheek enough to frighten her. As it was, it thudded into the wood by her hand. When she lifted it, her sleeve was caught, pinning her to the helm.

I felt grim satisfaction. That worked too. Might have been better, in fact.

I couldn’t ignore the pistols of the crew. I hoped they cared somewhat for Landon as I ducked behind him. He tried to roll away, but I grabbed him by the waist, putting pressure on his wound. He yelped.

“Don’t move,” I warned. I looked at the captain. “Pearl, the next blade will hit your heart. Free me now and leave us be. We wish no more death between our two crews.”

“Do you know how many of our friends you killed?” Pearl ripped her sleeve free. “We lost beloved souls that day.” She hurled the blade to the main deck where it clattered. “We are past a truce.”

“You attacked us!” I argued. I could see the crewmates of the Royal Rose frantically nailing boards to the broken ones, but it didn’t look good. They needed to get to port for repairs. “Let me go. Now.”

“I will let you live,” Pearl said haughtily. “That is all I will allow.
